Curanderismo

Curanderismo is a form of folk medicine that is common in the southwestern United States. Practitioners, who are referred to as "curanderos" (male) or "curanderas" (female), may use herbs, prayer, rituals, or a variety of other techniques to cure a wide variety of maladies..

Illness are categorized as either "hot" or "cold" and the practitioner seeks to restore balance to the affected individual. There is no scientific evidence to support that curanderismo can cure any disease, but it has been reported that it can sometimes be effective for relief of symptoms.
